Questions to ask any recruiting provider
Evaluate the provider against your actual role and hospital requirements. Request clear answers and written terms rather than relying on a generic ranking.
- Who sources candidates and what screening is performed?
- What will our practice need to do during the search?
- What becomes payable if the search does not result in a hire?
Prepare the role brief
Write down the information a candidate needs to evaluate the position before the search begins.
- Specify the surgical discipline and credentials required.
- Document theatre access, imaging, anesthesia support and equipment.
- Clarify case ownership, referrals and perioperative responsibilities.
Plan the work location in Baltimore.
Name the street address, municipality and county, and keep Baltimore City neighborhoods separate from Baltimore County places. Baltimore County has no incorporated municipalities in the Census Bureau’s place-by-county file, so Towson, Pikesville, Owings Mills, Cockeysville, Catonsville, Essex and Dundalk are census designated places. Annapolis, Bel Air, Havre de Grace and Westminster are incorporated, while Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Glen Burnie, Odenton and Eldersburg are census designated places. A mailing name can differ from the Census place: the Census geocoder puts an Annapolis address on Bestgate Road in Parole, an Elkridge address on Marie Curie Drive in Columbia and a Bel Air address on Baltimore Pike in Bel Air North. Coverage on this site is limited to Maryland; a hospital in another state falls under a different licensing authority.
Give the hiring team one brief for each facility, with clinical work, technician delegation, weekend duties and location commitments stated together. Maryland licenses veterinarians from July 1 to June 30 and asks for 18 hours of continuing education every year, so state the renewal date and the support the practice provides. O*NET OnLine, using Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, lists a median annual wage for veterinarians in the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson area slightly below the Maryland median and well above the national median, which is context candidates may bring to an offer. The University of Maryland catalog describes a regional DVM program with three years at Virginia Tech and a clinical senior year, and a veterinarian licensed in another state applies under COMAR 15.14.08. This site describes employer hiring coverage without claiming a Baltimore recruiting office.

Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center lists a surgical practice among the practices it houses and describes CT at its specialty hospitals and a 1.5T MRI in its Annapolis office, while Doc-Side Veterinary Medical Center, at 1705 Bank Street in Baltimore, lists endoscopy and laparoscopy among its services. The Board’s hospital owner page says a new or relocated hospital must pass a Board inspection before it opens, so a Baltimore surgeon joining a new site should ask whether that inspection is complete. A Baltimore surgeon brief should list the operating rooms, the imaging available on site and the technician support for each procedure, and say whether the surgeon works from a referral hospital or a general practice.
Plan Maryland credential checks before the start date.
Maryland licenses veterinarians through the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within the Maryland Department of Agriculture, and registered veterinary technicians are registered through the same Board. Assign a person to verify license status and the expiration date, record the verification date and resolve questions with the Board. Check any additional specialty credentials required by the employer with the issuing organization.
